A Glowing Red Square Over the Missile Fields — Under Oath

The House Oversight Committee's Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets convened its first UAP hearing on September 9, under the title *Restoring Public Trust Through UAP Transparency and Whistleblower Protection*. 2 Four witnesses appeared: Air Force veteran Jeffrey Nuccetelli, Navy Senior Chief Operations Specialist Alexandro Wiggins, journalist George Knapp, and Air Force veteran Dylan Borland. 3

Nuccetelli, a former military police officer with sixteen years in the Air Force, testified to a cluster of incidents around Vandenberg Air Force Base between 2003 and 2005. In October 2003, he said, Boeing contractors reported a massive glowing red square hovering silently over two missile defense sites; later the same evening, security personnel reported a bright, fast-moving object over the ocean. 1

Wiggins, a twenty-three-year Navy veteran whose specialty is radar operations, described a 2023 encounter aboard the USS Jackson: multiple objects emerging from the ocean, manoeuvring, and leaving no visible propulsion or thermal signature. 1

The Yemen footage

The moment that travelled furthest was not testimony. Representative Eric Burlison of Missouri played previously unseen footage from October 30, 2024, off the coast of Yemen: an MQ-9 Reaper tracking an orb, a second drone firing a Hellfire missile, fragments tumbling away from the impact — and the object continuing on its trajectory. 16

A munition designed to destroy armoured vehicles struck something, and the something did not stop. Whatever the correct explanation, that is a sentence the Department of Defense had never had to answer for in public.

What the hearing was actually for

The session was less about any individual sighting than about the legal machinery around them. Members reviewed proposed legislation to codify protections for whistleblowers disclosing information about U.S. government funding used to study UAP material. 7

That focus follows from an unglamorous reality: essentially every significant UAP revelation of the past eight years arrived through someone deciding to risk their clearance. Until the law makes that route survivable, the evidentiary base of this entire subject depends on the courage of individuals, which is not a policy. 8

Committee members left saying what they have said after every hearing since 2022 — that the government must be more transparent. 8 The difference this time was that four people had said so under oath first.
