The Beat Made the Front Page of TIME

TIME put it on the front page on Thursday, under Jeffrey Kluger's byline: *America Is Finally Taking Extraterrestrials Seriously*. 1 The peg is the serial release that began on May 8 — four tranches, more than 450 official reports reaching back to the middle of the last century, posted to a Department of War website by presidential order. 15 Much of the piece turns on this summer's Disclosure Forum in Washington. 13

A general-interest magazine running this as a cover story is a real marker. Eight years ago the same subject was a career hazard for the officials now quoted by name in it. 4

The trap inside the milestone

Mainstreaming is not the same as resolving, and the two are easy to conflate — especially when the coverage is favourable.

Every substantive finding of the past three years has been deflationary. AARO has resolved every case it could resolve into balloons, birds, drones and satellites. NASA's panel found no evidence of extraterrestrial origin and said the data was the obstacle. The five tranches have produced volume, not answers.

A headline saying America is finally taking the subject seriously is true. It is a statement about America, not about the objects.

The risk of respectability is that it feels like progress. Being taken seriously and being right are different achievements, and only one of them is in evidence.

The useful reading

The thing worth marking is not that the topic got a cover. It is that the argument has moved onto ground where it can be settled — published files, named officials, a statutory reporting requirement, an office Congress can subpoena.

That is what fifty years of ridicule prevented. Whether what is up there turns out to be exotic or entirely ordinary, the question is now being asked in a form that admits an answer. 1
