The Jellyfish Over Iraq, and the Marine Who Says It Was a Ghost Story

In January 2024, filmmaker Jeremy Corbell released thermal footage he said was recorded in 2018 over a U.S. joint operations base in Iraq. 12 The object in it drifts rather than flies, with what look like tendrils hanging beneath a central mass. The internet named it the jellyfish within a day. 3

By Corbell's account the object changed from dark to bright as it crossed the base, moved over a sensitive operation, and entered a nearby body of water, where it stayed for seventeen minutes. 3 He said it carries an official UAP designation and that the footage was confiscated immediately after it was filmed. 4

The Pentagon's response was notably thin, which drew its own coverage. 4

The other account

Then a former Marine, Michael Cincoski, said he had been at the base. His explanation was that the video was shot from an aerostat — a tethered surveillance balloon over the installation — and that the object was known to personnel there as the ghost story of the base rather than a live intelligence concern. 56

Corbell rejected the aerostat account, maintaining the footage was seized on the spot. 5

Why it stayed unresolved

Both men are describing the same base and cannot both be right about the platform. There is no released chain of custody, no official case file, and no analysis published by AARO. 4

Two named witnesses, one video, mutually exclusive accounts, and a government that will not say which is correct. This is the standard condition of the modern UAP file, not an exception to it.

Taken at its most conservative, an unidentified thermal object drifted over an American base in a combat theatre and the department has never publicly explained it. Taken at its most credulous, it is transmedium. The distance between those readings is exactly as wide now as it was on the day the clip appeared, and nothing in the public record has narrowed it.
