The Government Investigates Itself and Finds Nothing
AARO's historical review went through Project Blue Book and eight decades of records to answer one question: was there ever a cover-up? Its answer was no. Its omissions became the story.
Congress ordered it, and in March 2024 AARO delivered: a historical review of U.S. government involvement with unidentified anomalous phenomena, cleared for publication on March 6 and released on March 8. 12
The office worked with the National Archives through the records of Project BLUE BOOK, the Air Force's UFO investigation from 1947 to 1969 — 7,252 files containing 65,778 digital records. 1
The conclusions were categorical. No evidence that sightings categorised as unidentified were extraterrestrial vehicles. No evidence submitted to or discovered by the Air Force that any sighting represented technological developments beyond the scientific knowledge of the day. 1 No empirical evidence for alien technology, and no cover-up of one. 34
The absence
Fifteen months later, the Wall Street Journal reported what the same historical review had also found and what the published report did not say: that the Defense Department had deliberately seeded UFO stories for decades to screen classified aircraft programs, and that AARO had intended to publish this before the Air Force intervened and the material was scrubbed. 6
That reframes the document without falsifying a word of it. Every stated conclusion may be accurate. The report answered *was there a cover-up of alien technology* — no — while declining to mention that its own research had turned up an entirely different cover-up, of conventional technology, executed by manufacturing exactly the mythology the report was written to dispel. 6
A review of institutional deception, edited by the institution, produced a finding of no institutional deception. The editing was the finding.
What it is still good for
The volume remains the most complete public account of the government's historical UAP machinery, and independent analysts who went through it in detail found the archival work largely sound on its own terms. 5
Read as a history of Project BLUE BOOK, it is useful. Read as the government's final word on whether it has been honest about this subject, it did not survive contact with the following year's reporting.
