It started over Picatinny Arsenal, an Army research facility, in mid-November 2024. 9 By December, thousands of witnesses across New Jersey were reporting drones flying at night, and the sightings had spread into New York and Pennsylvania. 13

The objects were described as large — some up to six feet across — often flying with their lights off, typically between 6 and 11 p.m. 9 Runways at Stewart Airfield in New York shut for about an hour. 10 The FBI opened what New Jersey's Office of Homeland Security described as an active federal investigation. 1 On December 18 the FAA imposed extensive flight restrictions over the state. 9

The federal answer, and why it did not land

Federal authorities said they had not been able to corroborate the reported visual sightings, and that review of available imagery suggested many were manned aircraft operating lawfully. 1 On December 17, TSA walked officials through a slide deck showing that three widely circulated incidents — a medevac flight, an object over the ocean, one near a nuclear plant — were ordinary air traffic. 7 After the change of administration, the Pentagon reaffirmed no foreign actor was involved, and the White House said most of the aircraft were FAA-authorised. 7

Local officials rejected this flatly, and the mystery persisted in New Jersey regardless of the federal explanation. 8

Then-President-elect Trump wrote that the sightings could not be happening without the government's knowledge and called for the drones to be shot down; later he said the military knew where they had launched from. 6

What it actually demonstrated

Take the federal explanation entirely at face value — assume every object was a lawful aircraft, a hobby drone, or a misidentified star. The episode still established something uncomfortable.

For roughly a month, in the airspace above one of the densest sensor environments on Earth, the United States could not tell its own citizens what was flying over their houses in a way those citizens found credible.

That is a detection-and-communication failure whether or not anything unusual was up there. It is also the exact condition under which genuinely anomalous activity would be indistinguishable from noise. 24

Documents released in May 2025 showed what the federal government actually knew at the time. 7 The answer, broadly, was: not much, quickly.
