Seventeen Nights Over Langley

Between December 6 and 23, 2023, unauthorised drones flew over Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia on seventeen consecutive days. 12 The story did not become public until October 2024. 3

A dozen or more aircraft were involved, the number varying nightly. 1 Some were around twenty feet long. 1 They arrived in the evening, typically for forty-five minutes to an hour after sunset. 4

Langley is home to F-22 Raptors. The incursions were persistent enough that the Air Force relocated some of the aircraft to another base to protect them. 17

Nobody shot anything down

No action was taken to destroy or disable the drones, and the Pentagon said the incursions showed no hostile intent. 1 The FBI, Defense Department officials and AARO personnel held two weeks of meetings trying to establish where the aircraft had come from. 4

Ten months after the last flight, the Pentagon still could not say. 45

What it costs to not know

The legal and operational reality behind that inaction is more mundane than a conspiracy and more troubling than one. Commanders at domestic installations operated under unclear authority about what they could do to an unidentified aircraft over their own runways, and the guidance had not kept pace with cheap, capable drones. The response was to move the fighters.

The United States Air Force relocated fifth-generation fighter aircraft rather than confront an unidentified object over its own base, for seventeen nights, and then said nothing publicly for ten months.

Langley was not isolated. Reporting through late 2024 mapped repeated incursions near U.S. military sites, and the same autumn brought swarms over American air bases in Britain. 6

The pattern set the terms for what happened in New Jersey two months later, and for the counter-drone authorities the Pentagon finally consolidated in 2026. Whatever these objects were, the institutional lesson was identical either way: the sky over American bases was not controlled, and the people responsible for it knew.
