The Sphere That Flew Into the Ocean
Navy sensors aboard the USS Omaha recorded a spherical object descending into the Pacific. The Pentagon confirmed the footage was real, then said nothing else about it for five years.
In July 2019, about 125 miles off San Diego, the littoral combat ship USS Omaha used its electro-optical sensors to record a spherical object hovering above the Pacific. The object then descended into the water. 14
The footage reached the public in May 2021, released by filmmaker Jeremy Corbell. 24 The Pentagon confirmed the material was authentic — that the referenced photos and videos were taken by Navy personnel — and that it was part of the UAP Task Force's holdings. 3
The Navy's own working description of the object was *trans-medium*: a vehicle that operates in more than one physical medium. 1
Why one word carried so much
An object that flies is a puzzle for radar engineers. An object that flies and then enters the ocean without breaking up is a different order of problem, because the engineering requirements for the two environments are close to contradictory — an airframe optimised for atmospheric flight is not a shape that survives water entry at speed.
That is why *transmedium* appears in AARO's founding charter a year later, and why the FY2024 annual report specifically noted that none of its 757 cases occurred in the maritime or transmedium domains. The Pentagon tracks the distinction because the distinction is the hard part.
The admiral's argument
Retired Rear Admiral Tim Gallaudet, former Oceanographer of the Navy and a former acting head of NOAA, has spent years arguing this is where attention belongs. In sworn testimony to Congress in 2024 he described transmedium behaviour as central rather than incidental, and called the ocean the most important place to look. 85
His reasoning is structural: the sea covers most of the planet, it is far less observed than the sky, and a meaningful share of the strangest reports involve water. 6
Everyone argues about what is in the air. Almost nobody is instrumented for what may be underneath it.
Declassified 2022 footage later published showed spherical objects near a U.S. submarine, moving in and out of the water. 7 The Omaha sphere has never been identified.
