The Metallic Orb, and the Man Who Said It Was Nothing
AARO's first director told the Senate he had found no credible evidence of extraterrestrial activity — then declassified drone footage of a silver sphere moving over the Middle East.
Sean Kirkpatrick, the founding director of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee on April 19, 2023 — only the second congressional hearing on the subject in more than fifty years. 12
His central statement was unambiguous. AARO had found no credible evidence of extraterrestrial activity, off-world technology, or objects defying the known laws of physics. 13 Time and again, he said, UAP resolve into something already explainable. 1 The office was then reviewing about 650 cases. 6
He also told senators what did concern him, which was not aliens: the possibility of adversary capability, and specifically Chinese and Russian technology operating where it should not be. 7
And then the video
In the same session, the Department of Defense declassified and released footage recorded by an MQ-9 Reaper over the Middle East — a bright, shimmering silver sphere, moving beneath the drone. 48
Kirkpatrick walked the Senate through it frame by frame and used a phrase that travelled well beyond the hearing room: truly anomalous. 5
The director who had just told the Senate there was no credible evidence of anything exotic then played a video of an object his office could not explain and said so. Both statements were his, on the same day, and both were accurate.
Why that is not a contradiction
It only reads as one if you assume the two categories overlap. They do not. *No evidence of extraterrestrial technology* is a claim about origin. *Truly anomalous* is a claim about the state of the analysis — that the object's behaviour has not been matched to anything known.
Almost the entire public argument over UAP consists of collapsing that distinction in one direction or the other. Advocates hear *anomalous* and infer origin. Skeptics hear *no evidence of aliens* and infer that everything is resolved.
Kirkpatrick's position was consistently the narrow, defensible one in between, and it made him few friends. Within seven months he had announced his retirement, complaining that his office's findings satisfied no one. 3 The metallic orb has never been publicly identified. 4
