The Man Who Says He Flew the Retrievals

In January 2025, a man named Jake Barber told NewsNation's Ross Coulthart that he had worked as a contracted helicopter pilot lifting downed craft, some of which he believes were not built by humans. 1

His description of one recovery was specific and unadorned. He saw, he said, a white egg — an object roughly the size of an SUV, sitting on the ground. 24 His assessment of it was that you could tell visually it was anomalous, and that it was not human. 2

NewsNation aired the material as a television special on January 18 and published what it described as previously unseen video of a retrieval operation. 3

What is established and what is not

Established: Barber made these statements on the record, on camera, under his own name. The Department of Defense confirmed it is investigating the claims he made. 5 AARO said it was aware of them. 5

Not established: any of the substance. Pentagon spokesperson Sue Gough gave the department's standing formulation — that it has not discovered verifiable information substantiating claims that any program to possess or reverse-engineer extraterrestrial material has existed or exists now. 5

That denial is carefully constructed and has not varied since 2023. It says the department has found nothing verifiable. It is not a statement that nothing happened, and it has never been offered as one.

Why this case sits differently

Most crash-retrieval claims of the modern era arrive secondhand — an official who was told, an analyst who read a file, a witness relaying a colleague's account. David Grusch's 2023 testimony was explicitly of this kind; he was clear that he was reporting what others had told him.

Barber's claim is first-person and operational. He says he was there, in the aircraft, on the job. 16 That makes it far more checkable in principle: flight logs, contracts, tasking orders, colleagues.

A first-person claim is either corroborated or it collapses. That is an improvement over the alternative, whichever way it resolves.

More than a year on, it has done neither in public. The video has not been independently authenticated, no corroborating aircrew has come forward on the record, and the department's investigation has produced no announced finding. 5
